Turn a Poinsettia into a Sunflower for This Easy Fall Card
A poinsettia at Thanksgiving? Stay with me.
The Pretty Poinsettia Bundle may look like a Christmas-only purchase, but those layered petals make a rather fabulous sunflower when you cut them from Golden Glow cardstock and add a larger Early Espresso centre — which makes this one of my favourite fall sunflower card ideas for Canadian Thanksgiving.
That one switch turns a seasonal bundle into a warm fall card — and gives you another reason to use supplies you may already own. We love that around here.
This handmade Thanksgiving card combines a layered sunflower, embossed leaves, plaid Designer Series Paper and a simple fall colour combination. It looks detailed, but the construction is very manageable. The video does the heavy lifting, and the printable PDF gives you the measurements without making you read a small novel first.

The Trick: Use Poinsettia Petals as Sunflower Petals
The sunflower is made with the poinsettia dies from the Pretty Poinsettia Bundle. Instead of traditional Christmas colours, I cut the petals from Golden Glow cardstock and layered them around a larger Early Espresso circle.
The bundle includes a smaller poinsettia centre, but a sunflower needs something with a little more presence. A circle approximately ½ inch wide does the job. Use a small circle die or punch from your stash — no need to make this complicated.
The white gel pen accents on the flower centre are tiny, but they keep the dark cardstock from looking flat. I also used the gel pen to add faux stitching to the Cajun Craze layer. A few quick marks, and suddenly we appear very detail-oriented.
A Fall Colour Combination That Does the Coordinating for You
The main fall colour combination is:
- Shaded Spruce for the stem and leaves
- Early Espresso for the sunflower centre
- Golden Glow for the petals
Cajun Craze adds a warm supporting accent, while Very Vanilla softens the whole design. The result feels autumnal without relying on orange for absolutely everything.
This is why coordinated colour matters. When the cardstock, ink and Designer Series Paper already speak the same visual language, you can focus on creating instead of holding three almost-matching browns under a lamp and hoping for the best.
That’s not a “you” problem. That’s a coordination problem.

Card Measurements
- Very Vanilla card base: 11″ × 4¼″, scored at 5½″
- Cajun Craze cardstock: 3⅝″ × 2″
- Cajun Craze cardstock for the inside
- Sunflower Fields Designer Series Paper cut with an Everyday Arches Die
- Golden Glow poinsettia pieces
- Shaded Spruce leaves and stem
- Early Espresso circle, approximately ½″
- Very Vanilla sentiment strip
- Cajun Craze banner end
How to Make the Fall Sunflower Card
- Emboss the front of the Very Vanilla card base with the fall leaves folder from the Seasonal Cheer Mini Embossing Folders.
- Add a Cajun Craze panel inside the card to make the base feel more substantial.
- Adhere the Cajun Craze layer across the card front.
- Layer the Golden Glow poinsettia pieces to create the sunflower, then add the Early Espresso circle.
- Arrange the Shaded Spruce stem and leaves on the plaid arch and add the flower.
- Use a white gel pen to add highlights to the sunflower centre and faux stitching to the Cajun Craze layer.
- Stamp the sentiment in Cajun Craze ink and layer it over the Cajun Craze banner end.
- Wrap Linen Thread around the bottom of the arch three times and secure it on the back.
- Add the sentiment, attach the arch with Stampin’ Dimensionals and finish with Gold Adhesive-Backed Dots.

No Everyday Arches Dies? Do This Instead
Cut a rectangle from Designer Series Paper or cardstock and use it in place of the arch. You can emboss it, use a favourite pattern or round the corners if you like.
You’re aiming for the same design job: a strong vertical layer that anchors the sunflower and breaks up the horizontal Cajun Craze piece. The shape can change without the whole card falling apart. Promise.

Can poinsettia dies really make a sunflower?
Yes. Layer the poinsettia petals in Golden Glow and replace the small poinsettia centre with a larger Early Espresso circle. The colour and centre are what shift the flower from Christmas to fall.
Do I need the Everyday Arches Dies?
No. Replace the arch with a vertical rectangle of patterned paper or embossed cardstock. It creates the same visual structure using a simpler shape.
How do I make a lightweight card base feel sturdier?
Adhere a Cajun Craze cardstock panel inside the card. It adds weight and stability while tying the inside to the colours on the front.
What colours work well for a fall sunflower card?
